Is there any fruit that screams “summer” more than watermelon? Actually, watermelon isn’t even really a fruit; it’s related to the cucumber, which technically makes it a vegetable, but I still think of it as a fruit- the symbolic fruit of summer! It’s a staple at summer barbecues and picnics, and there’s nothing as refreshing as a cold slice of watermelon on a hot day. And it gets even better: not only is watermelon delicious and refreshing, but it’s packed full of nutrients and other good stuff! How nice is it when a treat is actually good for you? Here’s what’s so great about watermelon:

1. It’s hydrating:

Well, it is called “watermelon,” so it’s probably not a huge surprise that watermelon is 92% water. Eating watermelon is a tasty way to stay hydrated during the hot summer months. Freeze watermelon slices on a stick as a healthy alternative to sugary popsicles.

2. Antioxidants:

Eating foods that are high in antioxidants can help prevent cell damage and cancer.

3. Lycopene:

Lycopene is a powerful anti-oxidant, and it also helps with cardiovascular and bone health. In fact, watermelon has more lycopene than any other fruit or vegetable.

4. Lowers blood pressure:

Nutrients in watermelon help lower blood pressure and heart attack and stroke risk.

5. Relieves muscle soreness:

Overdo your workout? Eat some watermelon which can soothe your sore muscles.

6. Calcium:

Your bones and your teeth will thank you.

7. Potassium:

Potassium is helpful in maintaining kidney health.

8. Vitamin A:

Eating watermelon is good for eye health and healthy skin and hair.

9. Digestive health:

Because of its high fiber and water content, watermelon should help keep your digestion running smoothly and prevent constipation.

10. Vitamin C:

Vitamin C protects your eyes, your immune system, helps prevent asthma, and keeps your skin healthy.

11. It’s low in calories:

A cup of watermelon has just 40 calories, thanks to all that water.

There are so many ways to enjoy watermelon, too. It’s delicious in salads, cocktails and smoothies, or just as is- which is my favorite! And don’t throw out the seeds- rinse them off and roast them for a crunchy snack that’s high in iron, good fat, and protein.
